Abstract

This research delves into how cognitive skills intersect with design innovation, focusing on how students use logical thinking and cognitive understanding to master design visualization and conceptual sketching in typography. It emphasizes the importance of fundamental typography principles, such as readability and legibility, within an educational framework to enhance students' theoretical and practical understanding of typography. The study explores the fusion of design principles and theories to create novel typographic forms inspired by natural elements like flora and fauna, fostering a deep connection between design inspiration and nature.
In its experimental component, the study allows students to choose specific natural themes as inspiration for developing new characters, applying a mix of semiotics, design principles, and theoretical knowledge. This process enables students to produce varied and meaningful typographic variations, promoting further exploration and innovation. The exercise is designed to evaluate how students apply their existing design knowledge and creativity by using research techniques to analyze current trends and push their creative boundaries to enhance typographic experiments.
The hands-on approach of the study aims to demonstrate the critical role of cognitive skills in visualizing and actualizing design concepts. It highlights the importance of practical application in understanding and advancing typographic experimentation. The findings suggest that integrating cognitive strategies with creative practice in design education can significantly contribute to the development of advanced design thinking and innovation in typography, preparing students for the challenges of contemporary design endeavors.
